5 Kid-Friendly Summer Snacks

Surfside Beach is an incredibly affordable place for your family vacation, but we know that the cost of food is one that can add up quickly when you’re staying for a week. If you’re renting a vacation house with Surfside Realty, kitchens are a huge perk. Here are a few snacks that are healthier than a bag of chips and easy to whip up that will keep the kids happy:

Celery, peanut butter and raisins

You might recall, but this snack was called “ants on a log” when you were a kid. But it packs a protein punch with the peanut butter and is delicious. Not to mention, it’s easy to execute in the morning before everyone gets going.

Guacamole

Your children may not love avocados, but most kids love the tangy taste of guacamole. All you need is a few limes, tomatoes, avocados, red onion and cilantro and presto! You’ve got a healthy dip that everyone will love!

Sausage cheese muffins

These are easily transportable to the beach and will keep them full between meals. Grab the easy recipe here.

Pinwheels

These easy tortilla roll-ups look impressive, but they’re easily. Cream cheese, salsa and cheese are delicious together and will also work as a vegetarian option.

Ham & cheese sliders

Sliders are perfect for little kids’ hands. Add a little mustard or dijon, your ham and cheeses of choice and voila! Insta-snack!

Sunscreen Tips for your Surfside Beach Vacation

We love the sun and surf on our beautiful South Carolina coast, but the importance of using sunscreen when you’re outside cannot be overstated. We want our guests to enjoy their vacations, not spend it hurting and peeling. However, even when we have the best of intentions, we aren’t thorough enough with our sunscreen use. Here are a few tips for keeping your family safe in the sun:

  1. Look for “Broad Spectrum” sunscreen

Broad spectrum means that it protects from UVA and UVB rays, which both play a part in the development of melanoma.

  1. Apply early and often

Especially on children and fair skin individuals, you need to apply your sunscreen before you get to the beach and apply every 45 minutes to an hour after that. Try looking for sweat and waterproof formulas if your kids are going to be romping in the waves.

  1. Watch the wind

If you’re applying a sunscreen that sprays on, be sure to block the wind as much as possible. It’s easy for it to blow away and not actually hit your skin, which means you’re prone to a burn.

  1. Use sunscreen specialized for your face

Many companies offer face-specific sunscreen options and these are worth purchasing. Face formulas are usually stronger and don’t sting if it gets in your eyes from sweat or getting dunked in the pool.

  1. Don’t skip it on a cloudy day

Sometimes, cloudy days are the best time to go to the beach. There are fewer crowds and the heat isn’t as extreme. However, do not miss your sunscreen application on these days. UVA and UVB rays can come through the clouds with ease and burn your skin!

  1. Use an umbrella for shade

Umbrellas and small tents are permitted on Surfside Beach as long as they don’t impede the lifeguards’ views. Seek shade in the height of the afternoon when the sun’s rays are at its strongest.

If you do get burned, try using aloe and coconut oil to soothe your skin. And moisturize often to stave off the peeling. If you have blisters, see a physician.

What to Pack on Your Beach Vacation to Myrtle Beach, SC

Perhaps this is your first time Visiting Myrtle Beach and you’re unsure of what to pack. Perhaps you’re a seasoned visitor the area but you always seem to forget that one important thing-- what was that thing again? These tips will help you feel at ease while you’re on your way to paradise.

Clothing

The beauty of being on a beach vacation is that clothing items required are fairly standard no matter where you go!

  • Bring at least two swimsuits per person so you can alternate days of hanging them to dry; there’s nothing worse than putting on a cold, damp bathing suit in the morning.
  • Flip flops are likely the only shoes you’ll need there. Unless you plan on going to a very formal dinner, make life easy and stick with the one pair of sandals!
  • Something to wear down to the beach over your suit. This will especially come in handy if you wind up with an unfortunate sunburn and need to cover up without being forced indoors.
  • Workout attire for your morning jog or yoga. Even if you’re not a regular fitness nut, being at the beach tends to inspire people to be more active! Tip: don’t worry about packing tennis shoes if you don’t want to; it’s actually better for your body to run barefoot on the sand!
  • Accessories are essential. Make sure have a hat and pair of sunglasses for every member of the family.

Necessities

Your vacation home or condo rental will likely be well-equipped with everything you’ll need, but just in case:

  • While you’ll likely have beach towels provided in addition to your bath towels, bring some beach towels just in case. There’s nothing worse than having to sit on a bath towel on the beach all day. Not to mention all the additional loads of laundry you’ll have to do…
  • Stock up on groceries on your way to your rental. We find that once guests arrive, they typically don’t want to leave. That’s the beauty of a rental- you don’t have to! So, do yourself a favor, hit the grocery store ahead of time, and don’t forget plenty of water!
  • SPF. While we know you want to get your tan on, please protect yourself from those damaging UV rays at the very least. This requires a minimum of SPF 30 for your body and 50 for your face. There’s nothing worse than getting a bad burn on the first day of your vacation and winding up stuck indoors.

Afterthought Items

It’s nearly impossible to remember everything regardless of how organized you are or how far in advance you pack. Included in this section are a few of the items that, in our experience, people definitely seem to overlook and really wish they hadn’t.

  • If you do refuse our sound advice and forgo the sunblock, you’ll want to make sure you’re fully stocked with aloe vera or aftersun lotion. Ouch!
  • Pack a large freezer bag for every member of your family. This will allow you to take a swim before you leave without worrying about your entire suitcase smelling like mildew.
  • Citronella candle. If you’ve never experienced South Carolina in the summertime, trust us on this one. Typically, the closer to the beach you are, the safer you are from those pesky mosquitoes because of the great breeze.
  • Don’t forget a hairbrush! Enough time spent in the ocean or sitting on the beach gives you those salty waves that aren’t always easy to untangle.
  • If you’re an expert spotter of sharks’ teeth or love bringing shells back home, bring something along to collect them in!

Pack the Perfect Beach Picnic

We’ve all been there: you spend all morning getting the family ready for the beach, lathered up with sunscreen, finally make your way to the perfect spot only to realize it’s noon and you have no food in sight. Naturally, you’re hungry instantaneously.

Whether you’re packing a picnic for a beach day with the family, friends or your significant other, we’ve provided a list of tips and tricks for ensuring hunger doesn’t get in the way of your relaxation time.

Tip #1: Stick to finger-friendly food.
Don’t let plates or silverware get in the way. Tasty crowd-pleasers for beach snacks include things like: fruits such as apples or raspberries (avoid strawberries unless you remove the stems first), veggies such as celery sticks or baby carrots with hummus for dipping, chips and salsa (never fails), and even hard-boiled eggs. If you’re really into packing a salad, a great hack is packing them individually in plastic cups, the dressing on the bottom, with lids on the top!

Tip #2: No more mayo.
Sandwiches are a great go-to for your beach picnic. It’s easy to make a bunch of them at once when packing your picnic and they fill you up for a full day at the beach. An easy mistake, however, is putting mayonnaise on your sandwiches which will go bad fairly soon after sitting in the hot sun. Unless you plan to eat them as soon as you get to the beach or have a really fancy cooler, choose a different spread for your sandwiches and wraps.

Tip #3: Choose your cheese wisely.
Cheese and crackers are another great beach snack and it’s easy to continue eating throughout the day. The kids love it too! Be sure to choose softer cheeses such as brie, which will only become more delicious after sitting in the heat. The kids, and you for that matter will want to eat that expensive sharp cheddar or manchego once it’s saturated in oil.

Tip #4: Bottles of frozen water.
So simple yet so many benefits! Place a few bottles of water in your freezer the night before your day at the beach and some the morning of. This way, you’ll have a few very frozen bottles to keep your food cold and still be that refreshing sip at the end of the day. You can also place behind your neck to keep you nice and cool. Sip on your partially frozen bottles at the beginning of your day!

Tip #5. Don’t forget dessert!
While chocolate chip cookies are a common favorite (because they’re oh-so-delicious), you might be better off sticking with brownies which are less likely to melt all over the place. Another genius hack: try making mini cupcakes and put them in an empty egg carton for easy transportation!

Now that you have the basics, don’t forget the baby wipes and remember the corkscrew is key- in fact, you might as well just leave both of these items in your picnic basket for safe measure!

Happy picnicking!

5 Reasons a Day at the Beach is Good for Your Health

Though you likely don't need any additional reasons to spend a vacation at the beach, here are 5 reasons a day at the beach is good for your health:

The saltwater is great for your body.

Saltwater heals small nicks and scrapes while a long soak in it can do wonders for your muscles and joints. It also offers a great exfoliant for your skin which means you’ll be able to get rid of that top layer of dry skin that’s been itching you for days!

You’ll get to soak up some Vitamin D.

A good intake of Vitamin D is great for your skin and overall health which means a day at the beach provides the perfect way to soak up the sun. However, be sure you’re regularly reapplying sunscreen throughout the day because too much sun can be a bad thing!

You’ll likely go for a walk.

While spending time at the beach, it’s hard to resist a walk along the shore which is a good thing! Going for a walk along the beach will promote strong blood flow, loosen up tight muscles and overall add some energy back to your body.

A beach nap is inevitable.

As long as you’re not squeezed amongst a crowd of kids, you’ll likely find yourself dozing off to the sound of waves and gulls chirping. A nice nap a great energy booster and is a great way to reset your body.

The beach works as a stress reliever.

Not only do the sound of the waves work as a great stimulate for a nap, it also works alongside the warm ocean breeze and overall landscape to produce some much-needed stress relief.
