What to Pack for Your Winter Beach Trip

For many families, winter is the best time to visit the beach. The crowds are significantly thinner, the temperatures are not so sweltering, and the prices are often much lower than what you’d find during the summer. But visiting during the winter means packing slightly differently than you would if you were vacationing during the summer.

Here’s our breakdown of what to pack for your winter beach vacation to Surfside Beach.

Bathing Suit.

Just because it’s winter doesn’t mean you shouldn’t still try to splash around in the water! Yes, it’s going to be a bit on the chilly side, but does it really count as a beach trip if you don’t at least try to get in the water? Plus, many of our vacation rentals include pools with optional pool heat.

Layers, Lots of Layers.

Winter in Surfside Beach means that temperatures will vary. Oftentimes, you’ll find it chilly in the morning, warm by the afternoon, and chilly again in the evening. Pack lots of options so that you can add or remove layers, depending on the temperature at different points of the day.

Umbrellas.

Winter in the South means that you’re more likely to encounter rain. Prepare by packing umbrellas, galoshes, rain coats, or anything else you think you’ll need to shield you from the elements.

Beach Shoes.

We South Carolinians swear by our flip-flops. Even on the off chance we get snow, most of us will still venture out of the house in our treasured sandals. But it’s smart to have a pair of boat shoes or slip ons that you can wear on the beach to keep your feet warm if it’s chilly.

Vacationing in Myrtle Beach in the Winter

The great thing about living and vacationing on the coast of South Carolina is that the weather stays relatively warm all year long, even during the winter months. So summer sometimes feels like it lasts the whole year long!

There are plenty more perks to vacationing in the off season than just the weather. Here are some of our favorites:

It's Cheaper

During the summer, you're competing against a very large number of people trying to get into a finite number of vacation homes, driving prices up. Meaning, you have to sacrifice some amenities in the name of staying in budget. In the off-season, it's easier to get into the perfect beach rental without having to pay beach season prices, as rental companies are trying to entice more people to stay in the cooler months.

It’s Less Crowded

No longer will you have to fight your way across a crowded beach ful of towels, umbrellas, and sunbathers. You'll feel like you're vacationing on a private beach! So feel free to spread out.

Enjoy Holiday Events

Myrtle Beach is absolutely breathtaking in the winter months. You can attend festive events like Nights of a Thousand Candles, Beach Ball Classic, Shadrack's Christmas Wonderland, South's Grandest Christmas Show, Broadway at the Beach Christmas Parade (just to name a few) that you won't be able to find anywhere else!

A Very Beachy Christmas

There are few better ways to spend the holidays than at the beach with your family, making sand angels, and opening presents as the waves crash upon the shore. Sometimes, however, it’s not always possible for you to actually make it to the beach for the holidays. But that doesn’t mean you can’t bring a little bit of the beach to your home! Here are some of our favorite tips for beaching up your holiday celebrations:

Make Beach-Themed Food. Get fancy by scouring Pinterest for creative beach food ideas like sand dollar cinnamon sugar cookies, “starfish” sandwiches, or fish bowl punch. Or, fall back on old standards like crab dip, popcorn shrimp, or fish and chips. Channel the beach as you’re cooking and it’s easier than you think to bring a little bit of the beach to your dining room table!

Beach Ornaments. Go the easy route and buy beach-themed ornaments from your local Hallmark store or try your hand at some DIY Christmas ornaments. Start simple by spray painting seashells and hanging them from the tree, or get a little more complicated and create a seashell garland for the tree made out of twine and starfish! Either way, you’re sure to feel more festive!

Calypso Christmas Music. By the time Christmas rolls around, you’ve probably heard enough Mariah Carey and Andy Williams to last you for the next 8 months. Mix up your Christmas tunes by perusing the “Calypso Christmas” section on Amazon. It’s hard not to feel relaxed as you’re curled up next to the fire, listening to “Joy To The World” played on steel drums.

Seashell Centerpiece. Put your creativity and DIY skills to use by creating your own Christmas-themed seashell centerpiece! Fill jars with sand and seashells, or peruse Pinterest for other fun ideas, like this one made from ornaments, seashells, and pearls that’s sure to be the talk of the holiday table for years to come!
