10 Things To Do in Myrtle Beach

When you think about a beach vacation, you probably imagine hours laying under the hot sun, swimming in the blue water, or building sandcastles on the shore, which are all awesome ways to spend a vacation.  But Myrtle Beach has so much more to offer than just the beach! So whether it’s rain, sunburn, or boredom keeping you off of the beach, there’s plenty to do during your stay in Myrtle Beach!

  1. Myrtle Beach Safari
Perfect for kids and adults of all ages, The Myrtle Beach Safari lets you experience what it would be like to go on an African Safari without ever leaving the state!
  2. Brookgreen Gardens
Touring the sculpture garden and wildlife preserve that is Brookgreen Gardens is a wonderful way to spend an afternoon. Don’t forget your camera, because you’ll definitely want to take lots of pictures!
  3. Myrtle Beach Pelicans
Myrtle Beach’s own minor league baseball team is the farm team for the Texas Rangers. TicketReturn.com field is also very family friendly and features innovative and unique concessions like the Monster Dog, a ½ pound hot dog with 15 toppings!
  4. Golf
The Myrtle Beach area is home to over 90 public and semi-private golf courses that are ready and waiting for you to get your golf on. The hardest decision you’ll have to make is choosing which one to tee off at!
  5. Mini Golf
No trip to Myrtle Beach is complete without a round of mini golf with the family! There are tons of courses to choose from, with different themes and obstacles that are sure to enthrall everyone in your family.
  6. The Market Common
The Market Common is known for being one of the best places to shop and dine in the area. But they also feature a number of free events throughout the year, like the Farmers Market, live music concerts, and “Movies Under The Stars,” to name a few!
  7. Magiquest
The perfect place for kids and adults to unleash their inner nerd, letting their imagination run wild. When you first arrive, you’re given a magic wand and clues for completing quests. It’s a very popular attraction, so try to avoid going on rainy days if you don’t like crowds.
  8. Franklin G. Burroughs - Simeon B. Chapin Art Museum
If you’re a fan of contemporary visual art, then you’ll definitely enjoy perusing the 10 galleries featuring local southern artists at the Franklin G. Burroughs - Simeon B. Chapin Art Museum. Best of all, admission is free!
  9. Myrtle Beach Sky Wheel
As long as you’re not afraid of heights, the Myrtle Beach Sky Wheel is a great attraction for the whole family, offering beautiful views of the beach and the surrounding area on the boardwalk.
  10. Medieval Times
This one is kind of cheesy, but we admit it’s our guilty pleasure. Who doesn’t love the chance to eat a giant turkey leg and beat on the table with a mug to cheer on your favorite knight! It’s like a real-life Game of Thrones (but without all the violence and adult content).

5 Things To Pack For Your Beach Vacation

When it comes to packing for a beach vacation, most people know to back the basics--bathing suit, sunscreen, flip flops, check--but that's not where your packing list should end! Here's our list of the 5 things you should pack if you're staying in a beach rental.

1. Household Necessities
Although we provide basic kitchenware, like plates and utensils, it's important to remember that you'll need to bring your own food, including spices and herbs. Many of our houses also come with washer / dryers and dishwashers, so you'll also want to bring detergent, dish soap, sponges, paper towels, toilet paper, and trashbags.

2. Linens
We offer linen packages with every booking, but if you elect not to purchase a linen package, then you'll need to remember to bring your own sheets and bath towels.

3. Beach Gear
Just like you would for any beach vacation, you'll want to bring things to make your time spent on the beach more comfortable. This could include beach chairs, umbrellas, towels, beach games, shovels, buckets, books, and a waterproof camera, among others!

4. In-Home Entertainment
Although Myrtle Beach, Surfside Beach, and Garden City Beach offer countless opportunities for entertainment, you might want to spend part of your vacation by staying in instead of going out. Keep yourself entertained with books, board games, DVDs, and arts & crafts supplies that will beat the occasional bouts of boredom.

5. An Extra Bag
It's inevitable that after any vacation, you're going to end up with some souvenirs. Be sure to bring an extra bag to carry all of your vacation purchases in, be they t-shirts, seashells, or your own arts & crafts projects!

Summer is the perfect time to catch up on all those books you've been meaning to read all year. Whether you're reading at the beach or by the pool, these 10 books are sure keep you entertained on your summer vacation!

1.    The Vacationers, Emma Straub
Hardcover, 304 pages
"Delicious . . . richly riveting . . . The Vacationers offers all the delights of a fluffy, read-it-with-sunglasses-on-the-beach read, made substantial by the exceptional wit, insight, intelligence and talents of its author.”--People (four stars)

2.    Gone Girl, Gillian Flynn
Paperback, 432 pages
“Ice-pick-sharp… Spectacularly sneaky… Impressively cagey… Gone Girl is Ms. Flynn’s dazzling breakthrough. It is wily, mercurial, subtly layered and populated by characters so well imagined that they’re hard to part with — even if, as in Amy’s case, they are already departed. And if you have any doubts about whether Ms. Flynn measures up to Patricia Highsmith’s level of discreet malice, go back and look at the small details. Whatever you raced past on a first reading will look completely different the second time around.” --Janet Maslin, New York Times

3.    Beautiful Ruins, Jess Waters
Paperback, 368 pages
“Lyrical, heartbreaking, and funny . . . Walter closes the deal with such command that you begin to wonder why up till now he’s not often been mentioned as one of the best novelists around. Beautiful Ruins might just correct that oversight.” --Kansas City Star

4.    The Good Luck of Right Now, Matthew Quick
Paperback, 304 pages
“Mr. Quick ventures to the edges of society,...He rewards us with an irresistible urge to think the best of humanity, to understand not only the need to walk in someone else’s shoes but also the altruistic power attained from doing so.” --Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

5.    The One and Only, Emily Griffin
Hardcover, 432 pages
“Brace yourself for a tearjerker: A tale of friendship and loyalty in a small, football-crazed Texas town shows how quickly things can change when tragedy challenges all that the characters hold dear.” --InStyle

6.    Little Known Facts, Christine Sneed
Paperback, 304 pages
“An entertaining, formally inventive read …the world that Sneed creates in Little Known Facts— a blend of truth and fiction that weaves real life actors and directors into Renn's everyday life — makes for a clever take and a fun read.” --Los Angeles Times

7.    Night Film, Marisha Pessl
Paperback, 640 pages
“A very deeply imagined book . . . sprints to an ending that’s equal parts nagging and haunting: What lingers, beyond all the page-turning, is a density of possible clues that leaves you leafing backward, scanning fictional blog comments and newspaper clippings, positive there’s some secret detail that will snapverything into focus.” --New York

8.    The Secret History, Donna Tartt
Paperback, 576 pages
"The great pleasure of the novel is the wonderful complexity and the remarkable skill with which this first novelist spins the tale. And a gruesome tale it is. . . . A great, dense, disturbing story, wonderfully told." --Cosmopolitan

9.    Wonderland, Stacy D’Erasmo
Hardcover, 256 pages
"Briskly addictive. . . Some sentences dance like wind chimes in a hurricane; others evanesce. . . D'Erasmo expertly conjures the seductive uncharted space that lures the sculptor, the musician..." --O, The Oprah Magazine

10. Cutting Teeth, Julia Fierro
Hardcover, 336 pages
"Cutting Teeth sings with beautiful sentences, masterfully crafted scenes, and a deeply imagined inner life for each character...a fresh perspective on the journey of parenting that is at once modern and timeless." --The Boston Globe

5 Ways To Stay Fit On Vacation

Going on vacation often means a lot of high-calorie meals, days spent lounging in the sun, and nights on the couch. The average person can gain 4-6 pounds on a week's vacation if they're not careful! Avoid sabotaging all the work you did to get your body beach ready, and incorporate these simple tips into your vacation to avoid packing on the pounds.

1. Take A Tour Of The Town

One of the best things about being in the Myrtle Beach area is that there are so many things to see and do! Instead of driving and paying to park in garages or taxis, rent a bike and ride on the beach, or go for a lengthy stroll along the boardwalk. Staying active while sightseeing feels like fun instead of work, and is a great way to burn a few calories without visiting a gym.

2. Go With A Group

Everyone could use a little extra motivation sometimes, and having someone in your corner to workout with is a great incentive. Try scheduling sunrise or sunset runs on the beach with a friend. If no one in your group wants to run with you, make new friends in the Grand Strand Running Club, a local runners group that meets up around the area several times a week for group running sessions.

3. Cook Your Own Meals

A great way to save money and calories is to cook your own meals instead of going out to eat every night. Our beach rentals have spacious kitchens, perfect for whipping up some delicious and healthy beach recipes! Plus, there's nothing better after a long day of fun in the sun, than a nice family dinner around the dining room table!

4. Create Your Own Routine

Not into running? There are plenty of low-impact exercises that can be done without having to leave the comfort of your air-conditioned beach rental. Try doing a set of squats in the sunroom, pushups on the porch, leg lifts in the living room, and burpees in the bedroom for a full body workout that you can do in under 30 minutes! Plan to do 3 sets of 15 reps for best results.

5. Play With Your Kids

One of the easiest ways to get plenty of exercise on vacation is by trying to keep up with your kids! Swim with them, run around with them on the beach, help them to build sandcastles... the opportunities are endless. You'll spend a rewarding day making memories with your children, and you'll stay fit at the same time. Just imagine how well you'll sleep at the end of the day!
