Surfing Lessons: You're Never Too Old to Learn

Vacations should not only be about relaxing in the phenomenal vacation rental homes that we can provide you with at Surfside Realty but also about trying new and different things. It’s about making memories that last a lifetime. That’s why we’re suggesting if you’ve ever wanted to learn how to surf (and even if you haven’t!) make this year’s vacation the summer you try it!

We don’t believe in using age as an excuse to miss out on fun times. That’s why no matter if you’re 7 or 70 you just might discover the time of your life when you climb onto a surfboard. Even if you don’t stick with it long term, just imagine the stories you’ll have to tell!

Surfing Lessons in Surfside Beach

The Eternal Wave Surf Shop, right here in Surfside Beach, SC, offers year round surfing lessons for individuals and groups. Private lessons one-on-one are provided by experienced instructors by the hour and include time on the beach and in the water both. You can also reserve lessons for group events like birthday parties and company retreats.

Their lessons take place 7 days a week around high tide. They are held in the morning when there is usually less wind and crowded conditions. Lessons are at Magnolia Avenue in Garden City Beach just one block north of Garden City Pier. There is free parking and plenty of spaces. It’s best to make a reservation by calling 843-839-1239 and give them 24 hours notice prior to your lesson. Surfboards are provided but bring your own beach towel, sunscreen and water bottle.

In addition to surf lessons Eternal Waves also gives paddle board lessons and has rentals of surfboards, kayaks, paddle boards, and beach cruiser bicycles. If you’d like more information about surf lessons or the surf shop you can reach them by phone at 843-839-1239.

6 Beach Bag Essentials

Summer is almost upon us and that can only mean one thing: It’s almost time to go to the beach! At Surfside Realty, we specialize in offering not only the best vacation rentals in Surfside Beach, but also the best advice about the beach that you can find! We’ve been around since 1962, so we’ve pretty much seen it all when it comes to the beach.

Here are our recommendations for the top 6 things you should always keep in your beach bag in order to avoid potential beach disasters:

Sunscreen

Sunscreen should always be the #1 item in your beach bag! We recommend keeping 2 bottles of different SPF levels in your bag. You should use a stronger SPF on your face, since that tends to see the most sun (plus, then you’ll avoid that weird sunglasses tan). Which brings us to…

Sunglasses

There’s nothing worse than getting all the way to the beach and realizing that you forgot to grab your sunglasses. But, if you always keep a few extra pairs in your beach bag, you won’t have to worry about spending the afternoon squinting.

Waterproof Speakers / Radio

We think the best music is the sound of the waves hitting the shore. But for some people, that can get monotonous after a while, and they’d like nothing more than to listen to Zac Brown while relaxing in the sun. In that case, have a waterproof speaker or radio with you so you can jam out under the sun.

Water

Being out on the beach all day leaves you vulnerable to dehydration, which might seem counterintuitive since you’re in the water all day. But all that salt in the ocean can actually dry you out. There’s nothing worse than having to cut a beach day short because you’re feeling sick from lack of water. Throw a couple of bottles of H2O in your bag and you’ll be set.

Snacks

Is that a rumbly in your tummy? Although Surfside Beach has a number of yummy restaurants right on the beach, it doesn’t hurt to have some snacks in your bag to tide you over from meal to meal. We recommend granola bars, fruits, veggies, or anything else portable and not impacted by the heat.

Entertainment

Whether you just want to read the latest fiction release or you’re into more active sports like Frisbee or volleyball, it’s good to have something to entertain yourself with between dips in the water.

What items are must-haves for your beach bag? Still haven’t planned your summer beach vacation? Don’t worry! Just contact Surfside Realty today and we’ll help you plan the vacation of your life!

5 Ways the Beach is Good for Your Health

In today’s busy world, people are running around 24/7 and it often seems like there aren’t enough hours in the day to get everything done. When you’re in the middle of being busy, it can sometimes be hard to justify taking a vacation. You’ve just got so much to do, you couldn’t possibly find the time… If that sounds familiar, snap out of it!

Here are 5 reasons that a beach trip is actually good for your physical and emotional health:

More Sunlight = Happier You

Sunlight has been shown to decrease depression and help make us happier overall. Have you ever noticed how you tend to be gloomier in the winter? That’s because you’re likely not getting enough sunlight! Sunlight exposure releases serotonin, which can have a positive effect on your sleep habits, appetite, and stress level. Sunshine is also a great source of vitamin D, which is important for your bone health, and your skin.

Like A Free Spa Visit

Sand works as a great natural exfoliator for your feet, helping to rid you of dead skin cells so they feel softer and refreshed. Removing dead skin cells from your body leads to healthier skin overall, decreasing blackheads and acne, and is a natural way to clean your body to feel happy, clean, and rejuvenated.

Look (and Feel) Younger

Ocean water is full of great anti-aging minerals and the salt in the water helps to preserve your skin’s elasticity without any fancy chemical peels or procedures. Be sure that you’re wearing sunscreen, though, because too much sunlight dry you out and counteract the benefits of the salt water.

Get Movin’

When you’re at the beach, you tend to be more active. From jumping and playing in the ocean to strolling along the shore looking for shells, you’ll naturally be more active than when you’re at home sitting at your desk.

Extend Your Life

When was your last vacation? If it’s been a while, you might think you’re actually getting ahead by not taking advantage of vacation time, but you’re actually putting your health at risk. Studies show that people who don’t take an annual vacation are 32% more likely to die of a heart attack.

So what are you waiting for? Request your time off now and reward yourself with a relaxing beach vacation

Best Songs to Listen to on the Beach

When you think of paradise, what do you imagine? For us, it's lounging on the beach, margarita in one hand, a good book in the other while Jimmy Buffett plays in the background. No beach trip is complete without the music to go along with it (although, sometimes the only music you need is the sound of the waves as they hit the shore). Here's a list of our favorite beach tunes to get you in a surf mood, whether you're at the shore or stuck behind a desk!

  1. "Margaritaville," Jimmy Buffett
How can you not include this Jimmy Buffett classic on a list of best beach songs? Listen to any song by Jimmy Buffett and it’s easy to close your eyes and pretend like your troubles are a million miles away.
  2. “Sun Daze,” Florida Georgia Line
Because isn’t summer just all about getting your sun daze on?
  3. “The Tide is High,” Blondie
This breezy reggae song by the rockband Blondie isn’t your typical “beach” song, but something about it sounds great when paired with summer sun and sand. Give it a try!
  4. “Toes,” Zac Brown Band
Zac Brown Band, like Jimmy Buffet, has a knack for putting out music that just screams to be played at the beach! “Toes” is our top choice because he specifically mentions putting your toes in the water. Which is exactly what we wish we were doing right now!
  5. “(Sittin’ On) The Dock of the Bay,” Otis Redding
This is a song that seems to appeal to people both young and old. It’s just a classic and it makes you feel like taking things down a notch and living life a little more slowly, just like when you’re on vacation.
  6. “Summertime,” DJ Jazzy Jeff &  The Fresh Prince
Will Smith exudes a lazy confidence in this song and it’s easy to imagine listening to it while the sun’s setting on another beautiful day at the beach.
  7. “Smooth,” Santana featuring Rob Thomas
Something about the way Santana plays his guitar begs for this song to be played at the beach, wouldn’t you agree?
What songs are on your beach playlist?

8 Great Beach Games

The great thing about the beach is that it means so many things for so many different people. Adults see the beach as an oasis where they can relax and soak in some sunshine, kids see the beach as a never ending playground, and everyone sees it as a great way to escape from reality for a bit. No matter your age, the beach makes a great backdrop to play games and enjoy being outside. Here are some of our favorite games to play on the beach:

Sand Volleyball

Equipment: A large net, volleyball
Age: All ages
Sand volleyball is a classic beach sport that requires relatively little in terms of necessary equipment. Grab a net, some poles, and a volleyball and you’ll be ready to serve up fun all afternoon (pun intended!)

Football / Catch

Equipment: ball (football, beach ball, baseball, etc)
Age: All ages
Catch is an old standard and can pretty much be played with anyone who still has use of their arms…you can even play sitting down if you really wanted to! Just toss a ball back and forth, but don’t let the tide suck it away!

Bocce

Equipment: bocce ball set
Age: All ages (but better for older kids with a little more coordination)
Bocce is a great way to keep kids (and adults!) occupied for a while, and practice hand-eye coordination at the same time! All you need is an open space on the beach and a bocce set. Divide into teams and toss the center ball (pallino) and then try and toss your team’s balls one at a time to try and get closer to the center ball than the opposing team. You’ll be surprised how long you’ll find yourself playing!

Ultimate Frisbee

Equipment: Frisbee (or “flying disc” if you want to get really technical)
Ages: 12 and up (it can get a little competitive)
It seems like everyone has their own rules for playing ultimate Frisbee, so you can adapt the rules to your comfort level. The basics are you can’t run with the disc and once you receive the disc, you have 10 seconds to throw it to your teammate. For more comprehensive rules, consult USA Ultimate.

Silly Bucket

Equipment: 2 small buckets and 2 much bigger ones
Age: All ages (but we recommend little kids if you want to wear them out!)
This is fun twist on the classic relay race. Divide into teams and then Put each big bucket high up on the beach and give 1 kid on each team a small bucket. Teams compete against each other by running down to the beach and getting a bucket of water to pour into the big bucket, switching off between teammates each time they “dump.”

Flick’n Sticks

Equipment: 4 bamboo poles, 4 plastic cups (like Solo cups), and 1 frisbee
Age: 13+
This is a new, but really popular game that’s really taken off recently. To get the full rules for this game, watch the Youtube video. This one requires that you have a bit of skill in the Frisbee department, so you better start warming up now!

Musical Towels

Equipment: Towels for each person playing (minus 1)
Age: All ages
Basically musical chairs, but with towels. You know the drill.

Shell Toss

Equipment: Seashells
Age: All ages
This one is a fun onebecause you can change it up each time you play. Start by drawing concentric circles in the sand (like a dartboard), with each circle being worth a different amount of points (the smaller the circle, the more points it’s worth). Stand a designated distance away and try to toss your shell into the “bullseye” in the center! For added difficulty, try drawing non-concentric circles worth different points!
What are your favorite beach games?
