8 Great Beach Games

The great thing about the beach is that it means so many things for so many different people. Adults see the beach as an oasis where they can relax and soak in some sunshine, kids see the beach as a never ending playground, and everyone sees it as a great way to escape from reality for a bit. No matter your age, the beach makes a great backdrop to play games and enjoy being outside. Here are some of our favorite games to play on the beach:

Sand Volleyball

Equipment: A large net, volleyball
Age: All ages
Sand volleyball is a classic beach sport that requires relatively little in terms of necessary equipment. Grab a net, some poles, and a volleyball and you’ll be ready to serve up fun all afternoon (pun intended!)

Football / Catch

Equipment: ball (football, beach ball, baseball, etc)
Age: All ages
Catch is an old standard and can pretty much be played with anyone who still has use of their arms…you can even play sitting down if you really wanted to! Just toss a ball back and forth, but don’t let the tide suck it away!

Bocce

Equipment: bocce ball set
Age: All ages (but better for older kids with a little more coordination)
Bocce is a great way to keep kids (and adults!) occupied for a while, and practice hand-eye coordination at the same time! All you need is an open space on the beach and a bocce set. Divide into teams and toss the center ball (pallino) and then try and toss your team’s balls one at a time to try and get closer to the center ball than the opposing team. You’ll be surprised how long you’ll find yourself playing!

Ultimate Frisbee

Equipment: Frisbee (or “flying disc” if you want to get really technical)
Ages: 12 and up (it can get a little competitive)
It seems like everyone has their own rules for playing ultimate Frisbee, so you can adapt the rules to your comfort level. The basics are you can’t run with the disc and once you receive the disc, you have 10 seconds to throw it to your teammate. For more comprehensive rules, consult USA Ultimate.

Silly Bucket

Equipment: 2 small buckets and 2 much bigger ones
Age: All ages (but we recommend little kids if you want to wear them out!)
This is fun twist on the classic relay race. Divide into teams and then Put each big bucket high up on the beach and give 1 kid on each team a small bucket. Teams compete against each other by running down to the beach and getting a bucket of water to pour into the big bucket, switching off between teammates each time they “dump.”

Flick’n Sticks

Equipment: 4 bamboo poles, 4 plastic cups (like Solo cups), and 1 frisbee
Age: 13+
This is a new, but really popular game that’s really taken off recently. To get the full rules for this game, watch the Youtube video. This one requires that you have a bit of skill in the Frisbee department, so you better start warming up now!

Musical Towels

Equipment: Towels for each person playing (minus 1)
Age: All ages
Basically musical chairs, but with towels. You know the drill.

Shell Toss

Equipment: Seashells
Age: All ages
This one is a fun onebecause you can change it up each time you play. Start by drawing concentric circles in the sand (like a dartboard), with each circle being worth a different amount of points (the smaller the circle, the more points it’s worth). Stand a designated distance away and try to toss your shell into the “bullseye” in the center! For added difficulty, try drawing non-concentric circles worth different points!

Make the Most of Traveling With a Young Child

The first time you travel with a young child will be a great adventure for everyone. It not only takes courage to travel with young children but for the most successful venture, it also takes planning. The people that take the time to plan out each day and everything they?ll need for each day, are the people that have the most success and the least stress.

Make the Most of Traveling With a Young Child
With a young child, you?ll be playing in the sand rather than tanning on it and you?ll be feeding the seagulls rather than listening to tunes from your headphones. Chances are you?ll be kneeling and squatting often so why not consider it exercise. The best part of all though is that you?ll have the opportunity to discover the small wonders of the world as seen through a child?s eyes ? bubbles at the water?s edge, the smallest seashells seashells, shiny rocks, baby crabs, crunchy dried seaweed and plenty more. These are both the gifts and the delights that come with spending time in a child?s presence.
Make the Most of Traveling With a Young Child
When you have children every trip turns into a great adventure. You might make your itinerary before you leave home but try to stay flexible and take your lead from your child. From the moment you set foot into one of our Seaside Rentals until the moment you leave to head home, everything holds the possibility of fun in a child?s mind. Remember that adventure is not so much a destination as it is a journey so be sure to have fun along the way.Be sure you make your reservations for your chosen vacation rental well in advance of leaving home. This is especially important when traveling with children. Be sure to ask about any baby equipment you may need during your stay. Things like cribs, play yards, toys and high chairs are available in some of our rentals. The Melissa & Doug Blog The Playtime Press has a great article entitled "3 Steps to Ensure You Don't Need a Vacation FROM Vacation." It's chock full of advice on how to engage your kids in the process of planning a vacation which helps to take the stress off everyone.Keep an open mind as you set out on your vacation and keep the expectation of fun in your heart. Keep your child on the same schedule they have at home with regards to naps and meal time and you should experience a super fun-filled vacation with your young child.

The Best Winter Beach Recipes

One of the biggest advantages to renting a beach house for your vacation instead of staying in a hotel is that you get a full kitchen to cook in (and can therefore save some money on going out to eat every night). In order to avoid having to buy a bunch of groceries that will just end up going to waste at the end of your vacation, we've come up with these recipes that use all the same basic ingredients and can be thrown together really quickly and easily!

Ingredients You’ll Use:

  1. Proteins: Chicken, Salmon, White Fish, black beans
  2. Vegetables: Broccoli, tomatoes, onions, cucumber, lemons
  3. Basics: olive oil, salt and pepper, Cornmeal, flour, butter, chicken broth, garlic
  4. Carbs: Tortillas, Rice, sweet potatoes
  5. Dairy: Cheddar Cheese, Parmesan, sour cream
  6. Condiments: Mustard, BBQ sauce, mayonnaise, salsa

Meal #1: Cornmeal Crusted Chicken Nuggets with Parmesan Broccoli – Cut chicken breasts into chunks and then toss in cornmeal & season with salt and pepper. Pan fry in olive oil for 6-8 minutes. While chicken is cooking, steam broccoli in boiling water for 3 minutes. Top broccoli with parmesan cheese. Serve nuggets with mustard for dipping and broccoli on the side.

Meal #2: White Fish Tacos with Spanish Rice – Saute ¼ cup of chopped onion & 1 clove of minced garlic in olive oil in a pot. Add 1.5 cups of rice, 2 cups of chicken broth and 1 can of chunky salsa and simmer for 20 minutes or until liquid is gone. While rice is simmering, season fish with salt and pepper and then grill or pan fry until flaky. Microwave tortillas for 10 seconds until soft. Add some fish to each tortilla and top with a little mayonnaise, tomatoes, chopped onion, sour cream and any other veggies you desire. Serve with Spanish rice.

Meal #3: Grilled Chicken with Cucumber Salad – Let chicken marinate over night in mixture of olive oil, garlic, and lemon zest, salt and pepper, and for 6-8 minutes per side or until chicken reaches an internal temperature of 165 degrees. Mix together juice from a lemon, salt, pepper, and olive oil. Thinly slice cucumber and onion and dice a tomato and add to the lemon-olive oil mixture and let sit for 10 minutes. Serve chicken with BBQ sauce and cucumber salad.

Meal #4: Mustard Crusted Salmon with Mashed Sweet Potatoes – Peel and chop sweet potatoes and boil for 20 minutes. While sweet potatoes are boiling, mix equal parts mustard and sour cream, with 1 tsp of lemon juice. Season salmon with salt and pepper and coat thoroughly with mustard mixture and roast salmon in oven for 10-12 minutes. Once sweet potatoes are soft, mash and add sour cream, salt, and pepper and serve with Salmon.

Meal #5: Chicken and Broccoli Sauté with Rice – Boil 1.5 cups of chicken broth and add 1 cup of rice and simmer for 20 minutes until all liquid is gone. While rice is cooking, add olive oil to a pan and sauté diced onions, broccoli, and chicken breast cubes. Cook over medium-high heat for 10 minutes or until chicken reaches an internal temperature of 165 degrees. Remove pan from heat and add diced tomatoes and stir. Serve chicken and vegetables over rice.

Meal #6: Loaded Quesadillas with Sweet Potato Chips – Thinly slice sweet potatoes and toss in olive oil and season with salt and pepper. Bake in a pre-heated oven at 375 degrees for 10 minutes, flip, and then cook for another 10 minutes. While potatoes are cooking, melt ½ tbsp of butter in a pan and place a tortilla in the center of the pan over medium heat. Layer with cheese, chicken, black beans, tomatoes, onions, more cheese, and a second quesadilla. Cook until the bottom tortilla starts to brown and then carefully flip over so that the second side browns and the cheese melts thoroughly. Cut into quarters and serve with sour cream.

Making Plans for That Great Summer Vacation

You should always do plenty of online research before you choose your vacation rental. Read the testimonials from previous guests and learn what they have had to say about their stay. Look at all of the photos provided of the rental you’re considering. And of great importance – build your itinerary far in advance of leaving home. It’s easier to research the area and what there is to do during the time you’ll be there right from your own living room.

Making Plans for That Great Summer Vacation

No matter where you decide to stay, be sure to ask plenty of questions before you make your reservations. If you’re traveling with an infant or small child, ask about the baby equipment some units may supply. Ask about furnishings as well as extra features like dishwasher, washer/dryer, etc., that may be important to you. Be sure you know the distance of your vacation home to the beach, if you’re unclear look the address up using Google Earth for a live real-time image.

We’re happy to answer any questions our guests may have about any of our rental properties. We have a wealth of information on our website at Surfside Realty but if you still have questions you can reach us by phone toll free at 800-833-8231.

Attraction Spotlight: Surfside Beach Pier

One of the most iconic attractions in Surfside Beach is the Surfside Pier, which has been a mainstay of visitors and residents of Surfside Beach since 1953. The pier is a great place for families and fishers to visit during their time at the beach as it offers some pretty breathtaking views of the water and the beach.

Here are 5 Facts about Surfside Pier you might not know:

  1. The pier has been rebuilt about 3 times since then, and it’s currently about 830 feet long.
  2. The Pier has a tackle shop, gift shop, and ice cream parlor located in it and is open to walkers and fishers.
  3. You can get a great meal at the Surf Diner one the pier for some of the best waterfront dining on Surfside Beach!
  4. Residents and homeowners in Surfside Beach get free access to the pier with proper identification. Visitors get daily walking access to the pier for just $1.
  5. The coast for float fishing is $12.50 per person daily for non-residents and $6.25 per person per day for residents; the price for bottom fishing is $9 per person per day for non-residents and $4.50 per person per day for residents.

Our guests have said that some of their fondest vacation memories from Surfside Beach have happened either on the pier or using the pier as a backdrop. So when you’re planning your Surfside Beach vacation, be sure to include the pier on your list of “Places To See!”
