Our 3 Favorite Places for Waterfront Dining on the Grand Strand

There’s nothing like enjoying the flavors of Myrtle Beach while watching the Sandpipers race along the shoreline, or listening to the waves lap the sand. Here are three favorite places to eat and enjoy waterfront views:

The South End: The Gulfstream Cafe

Marlin Quay Marina is a short little pit stop for boaters in Garden City, but The Gulfstream Cafe is a local favorite. Not only does it have a beautiful third-floor deck with expansive views, both levels of dining rooms feature floor to ceiling windows to take in the sunset. We recommend the surf and turf or any special on the menu. The bar is fully stocked and knowledgeable mixologists will provide you with your favorite cocktails, wine or beer. This is an especially popular destination during the holidays, so book your reservation in advance if you’ll be in the area near Christmas or New Years Eve.

Heart of Myrtle Beach: Sea Captain’s House

The Sea Captain’s House is a mainstay of Myrtle Beach. Located on Ocean Blvd. in the heart of Myrtle Beach, this restaurant has been open for over 50 years and is a local favorite. Don’t let the quaint exterior full you. Once you walk in, you’ll have a great oceanfront view. As for the food, they have menus for breakfast, lunch and dinner. But don’t miss the She Crab Soup or crab cakes. They’re among the best at the beach.

The North End: Filet’s on the Water

Filet’s on the Water is a more modern seafood joint located on the Intracoastal Waterway next to the Little River Swing Bridge. Its views are beautiful and the food is equally so. Start with the mussels or sushi and, of course, get a signature filet. They also have an amazing dessert martini menu that is a must-try.

No matter where you dine in Myrtle Beach, you’re sure to not be far from the water, but these three places are our favorite—from traditional to modern, from the inlet to the ocean—for dining on the water without having to be outside.

Mother, Daughter Getaway in Myrtle Beach

Myrtle Beach makes for the perfect mother, daughter beach getaway, especially in the fall season. With mild temperatures, outside activities are actually enjoyable. The sun's heat isn’t pounding down on you as you walk and the cold, bitter air isn’t rushing across your face.

So, as you plan your getaway, keep these activities in mind.

Walk around The Market Common.

The Market Common is filled with shops to browse and restaurants to enjoy. On special days each month, events are also held here. It makes for a great place to wander around, talk and enjoy some great food.

Go on the Barefoot Princess Riverboat.

Take a sightseeing, sunset or dinner cruise. Sightseeing tours offer narration as you drift through the river, while sunset tours offer exceptional views of the sun setting over the water. Dinner cruises offer the chance to enjoy a night on the water while dining and enjoying onboard entertainment.

Visit Vintiques Antique and Variety Mall.

A stroll through Vintiques offers a chance to see vintage, antique and repurposed one-of-a-kind objects. It makes for a fun shopping trip that rests a little outside of the norm.

See a show at The Alabama Theatre.

The Alabama Theatre offers fun, entertaining shows throughout the year. This includes shows that their own cast and crew put on as well as guest entertainer shows. During the fall and winter seasons, the theatre puts on a dynamic Christmas show called “The South’s Grandest Christmas Show” which was voted the “most outstanding holiday show” in Myrtle Beach.

Go to Broadway at the Beach.

Broadway at the Beach is another great destination for strolling through some shops and enjoying different restaurants.

Go for a walk on the beach.

Of course, a walk along the beach is a must. Take a walk along the beach at sunset for an unbelievable view.

Vacationing With Kids in Myrtle Beach

Family vacations to the beach are a wonderful way to create cherished memories that will last for a lifetime! But traveling and vacationing with children can be stressful and overwhelming if you’re not prepared. Follow our tips on how to successfully vacation with kids in order to ensure that your family vacation is successful and fun for everyone!

Plan for Kid-Friendly Activities

Surfside Beach and Myrtle Beach are both extremely family-friendly, so there are a number of kid friendly attractions and activities that are sure to please everyone in the family, young and old! Some great ideas: riding the Skywheel, zip line, or Broadway Grand Prix adventure.

Do Your Research for Kid-Friendly Restaurants

The Grand Strand has no shortage of great restaurants, but not all of them are kid-friendly. Before you set off on your vacation, do some research on a few restaurants you’re interested in trying. Have your kids look at the menus beforehand so you know that they’ll find something on the menu they’d like to eat (to avoid any meltdowns in the restaurant later).

Prepare a Rainy-Day Survival Plan, Just in Case

While we all hope for the perfect, sunny vacation when we head to the beach, sometimes Mother Nature has other ideas. Put together a list of indoor activities—like museums, movie theaters, or other kid-friendly places—as possible activities for when you’d otherwise be stuck inside because of the rain. Also plan to bring some board games, coloring books and crayons, and DVDs to help pass the time at your vacation home for a cheap rainy day activity.

Surfside Realty has a number of kid-friendly vacation rentals your family is sure to love! Browse our website or call us to start planning your fall vacation!

Fishing Spots in Myrtle Beach

Fishing has been a popular pastime for men and women for hundreds of years. Sure, you might have a favorite fishing hole back home, but that doesn’t mean you should leave your fishing gear at home when you come to the Grand Strand for vacation! Instead, we’ll help you find a great fishing hole-away-from-home while you’re on vacation!

Fish from the Beach

If you have your fishing license, you can simply find a comfortable spot on the beach, and setup your gear right there! It’s simple and easy and requires little setup or financial investment (as long as you have your own equipment). Off the coast, you’re most likely to catch whiting or black sea bass.

Go on a Fishing Charter

There are many captains and cruises available for you to charter if you want to spend a day with out on the ocean fishing. You can stay close to the coast or go deep sea fishing for a chance to catch things like tuna, grouper, or triggerfish!

Fish Off a Pier

Many piers in the Myrtle Beach area will allow you fish off the side. The Springmaid Pier on Ocean Blvd actually holds the state record for Spanish mackerel! You’re also likely to catch sheepshead or spadefish off a pier.

Find Some Freshwater

There are numerous rivers (like the Waccamaw and the Black Rivers) in and around the Myrtle Beach area that are easily accessible for fishing purposes. In Freshwater, you’re most likely to catch catfish or crappie.

What are your favorite things to catch when fishing? Let Surfside Realty plan your perfect fishing getaway!

Ocean VS Pool: The Great Debate

Few summer vacation issues are more divisive than the classic "ocean vs pool" argument. For decades, people have escaped to the water for vacation and relaxation, but for as long as pools have been around, families have fought over which body of water--the ocean or the swimming pool--is better for vacation.

While we believe there's no correct answer, we've put together a list of perks associated with both the ocean and the pool. Hopefully this will help you decide!

Ocean Perks

  • Sand is more comfortable and versatile than the concrete surrounding a pool
  • Saltwater is better for your skin
  • The waves offer activities like surfing, boogie boarding, kite surfing, and more
  • You can go fishing in the water and catch your own dinner
  • Calming sound of the ocean as the waves crash on the shore
  • Sand helps to exfoliate your feet
  • Fewer insects due to wind coming off the ocean

Pool Perks

  • No animals, like fish or dolphins, in the water
  • The water is clear, so you can see straight to the bottom
  • No waves, so you can float and relax
  • Chlorine is better for sensitive skin than saltwater
  • Less of a trek to get back home when you want to
  • Fewer seagulls to snatch your lunch
  • Not likely to cut your foot on a shell hiding under the sand

No need to choose between beach and pool: with Surfside Realty's vacation rentals, you can take advantage of the best of both worlds! Contact us today to learn more.

6 Books to Add to Your Beach Bag in 2016

Few things are better than settling down in the sand, under the warm sun, putting on your sunglasses and pulling out a great book! Reading on the beach is such a widely practiced activity that there’s an entire genre of fiction devoted to “beach literature,” aka books that are light and fun to read between building sandcastles and jumping in the ocean.

Here are a few books to add to your beach library in 2016:

If you like dark mysteries:

All The Missing Girls, Megan Miranda

Arguably 2016’s The Girl on The Train, All The Missing Girls tells the story of a girl who left her hometown after her best friend disappeared, and then returns years later to take care of a family matter. You won’t know who to trust and you won’t want to put it down, so start this one first thing in the morning!

The Girl Before, Rena Olsen

Fans of Gone Girl will love The Girl Before, a story of a woman who is kidnapped and tries to put all the pieces together of her abduction and what it has to do with her husband. The plot alternates between past and present to throw the reader off their game, so pay close attention to this one!

If you like romances:

All Summer Long, Dorthea Benton Frank

Like most other Dorthea Benton Frank novels, All Summer Long is a witty and realistic tale of a New York couple who prepare to move to Charleston, SC for retirement. You’ll relate to the themes of how life and love evolve over the years.

Love & Gelato, Jenna Evans Welch

A sweet and whimsical story of people who go on a romantic adventure in Italy. A perfectly sweet novel to read on the beach that will have you hugging your sweetie closer!

If you like non-fiction:

It’s Okay to Laugh (Crying is Cool, Too), Nora McInerny Purmort

A memoir that tells the story of a woman who finally finds the one only to find out that he has rare, terminal brain cancer. It’s beautifully funny and poignant.

You’ll Grow Out of It, Jessi Klein

Lead writer and executive producer of “Inside Amy Schumer,” Jessi Klein tells tells the hilarious story of how she went from a tom boy to a “tom man” and found success.
